As soon as eggs have reached maturity retrieval procedure starts. During this procedure a needle is placed under ultrasound guidance into the ovary and eggs are collected from the fluid-filled structures called follicles. Those small cells which can be seen under microscope in liquid inside the tube are actually eggs. Oocyte pick-up (OPU) procedure can be performed by local or general anesthesia. If ovaries position is easy reachable by ultrasound probe and woman can stay motionless, OPU might be performed under local anesthesia. For women whose ovaries are situated farther or behind the uterus general anesthesia is necessary. Procedure takes about 10-15 minutes. Eggs can't be found in all follicles. Approximately 70% of follicles have egg inside. In couple of hours after eggs have been collected they will be cleaned and checked for maturity. Mature eggs are applicable for further fertilization. Patient may be sent home in 1-2 hours after eggs retrieval procedure has been finished.

PRE-RETRIEVAL INFORMATION
- Please, take Pregnyl or Ovitrel injection on the assigned day and time.
- No need to visit our clinic the day after injection.
- The night before procedure starting from 24:00 o'clock it's forbidden to drink or eat something (including small amount of water, gum and cigarettes).
- Don't drive on the day of procedure.
- On the procedure day come to clinic 30 minutes before appointment.
- Before anesthesia was done it is recommended to leave all valuable things such as rings, necklaces, credit cards and money to a close person.
- On the day of procedure at least one adult person must be next to you.
ATTENTION!
For eggs to become mature it's extremely important to use medicine in prescribed dose and time. In case of inaccuracy there is possibility that no eggs will be taken during the procedure.
INFORMATION ABOUT ANESTHESIA
Day of procedure
• Don't eat, drink or smoke 6 hours before procedure.
• If there is medicine you regularly use, keep using it according anesthesiologist prescription.
• If you have any feverish illness, it's necessary to tell it to anesthesiologist.
Exactly before the procedure
• Visit WC to leave your bladder empty.
• Take out a denture if you have one
• Take out lenses if you wear them
• Take off watches and jewelry
• Remove make-up and nail polish
In surgery rooms
• A catheter will be placed in your vein and medications will be given.
• During the procedure your heart and lung functions will be followed with special device.
After the operation
• You will rest until you recover from anesthesia. You may leave clinic directly after all further recommendations were done to you.
First 12 hours after the procedure.
• Don't drive!
• Don't drink alcohol!
• Avoid activities that require attention!
At home
• It's necessary to have someone who can help you
• If you feel pain, you may use paracetamol derivative painkillers.
• In case of sharp pain, fever, vomiting etc. call the doctor.
POST-RETRIEVAL INFORMATION
After the eggs retrieval procedure you might have pain in your groin and small vaginal bleeding might occur. It's absolutely normal. It's allowed to use paracetamol derivative medicine to kill the pain.
Medicine used during the procedure may cause dizziness and tiredness and this effect might last for a day. For this reason don't do any activities which require your attention e. g. driving.
The day after the eggs collection procedure spend in rest avoiding heavy activities and activities which can make your tired.
There is no any special diet to be prescribed after the procedure. You are free to eat and drink everything, But don't drink alcohol.
You are free to take shower but not bath.
In two days after eggs collection (if procedure was on Saturday it means Monday) till 16:00 o'clock embryology lab associate will call and inform you about the number of fertilized eggs and time when transfer is planned.
